AS / A2 Textiles
WHY
TAKE TEXTILES?
Do you enjoy working with fabrics, colour, pattern and texture? This
course will give you the opportunity to progress onto a textile design
/ fashion - based / fibre arts university course.
WHAT
ARE THE KEY AREAS OF STUDY?
The AS units consist of practical coursework, which is an open ended
project based on a set theme, linked to critical research. There is
also an externally set practical examination project with an eight week
preparatory period and a five-hour timed exam in which you will produce
your final outcome.
The
A2 units consist of a practical assignment with a supporting 1500 word
illustrated essay set by you after discussion with staff. There is also
an externally set examination project with an eight week preparatory
period followed by a fifteen hour timed exam.
WHAT
SKILLS WILL I NEED AND DEVELOP?
You will work with traditional and contemporary textile techniques,
in both 2D and 3D, producing fabrics, wall hangings, costumes or fashion
accessories. You will develop research and evaluative skills by studying
historical and contemporary textile and fashion designers and artists
as well as developing your problem solving skills as you work through
your assignments. Critical and creative skills will be enhanced as you
initiate, develop and realise your ideas through a personal, practical
art and design working process.
ARE
THERE ANY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS I NEED?
You will need to have an interest in Textiles and have at least a grade
C GCSE in an Art and Design subject or the equivalent.
HOW
WILL I BE ASSESSED?
All units are internally assessed and then externally moderated at the
end of the year. At the end of each unit, staff will assess your work,
give you feedback on your progress and give you time at the end of the
course to revisit and improve on your coursework units where appropriate.

Gallery
visits are an important part of both the AS and A2 programmes.
You
will have the opportunity to listen to visiting speakers from university
and from industry. You will also visit local university end of year
degree shows.
