BTEC First Public Services

WHY TAKE A BTEC FIRST IN PUBLIC SERVICES?
The BTEC First Diploma in Public Services provides you with the knowledge, skills and understanding you will need when moving towards a career in the uniformed services, such as the police, emergency fire services or prison service. The structure of the course allows you to develop your interests and gain a broad foundation of knowledge. You will be introduced to new areas, such as Law and its Impact on the Individual, Fundamental Nautical Studies or Land Navigation by Map and Compass.

The course investigates a number of different subject areas which may be relevant to organisations including the Police, Probation Services, Fire Service, Army, Navy, Royal Marines and RAF.

WHAT ARE THE KEY AREAS OF STUDY?
This is a one year programme equivalent to 4 GCSEs graded A*-C. If this year is successfully completed you will then be able to move onto the Certificate or Diploma in Public Services. During the course you will cover 6 subject areas; 3 core units and 3 specialist units. The core units are; The Uniformed Public Services, Public Service Skills, and Public Service Fitness. The specialist units are; Navigation with Map and Compass, Crime and its Effects, and Law and the Individual.

WHAT SKILLS WILL I NEED AND DEVELOP?
This vocational course will provide you with practical skills as well as knowledge. You will be expected to take part in team building activities, excursions as well as attend guest lectures. You are expected to work independently and carry out additional research in the completion of assignments.

ARE THERE ANY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS I NEED?
There are no special qualifications needed to take this course.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
The BTEC qualification is assessed by coursework. You will be expected to complete assignments during the year that may include written tasks, practical activities and presentation tasks.

PRIESTLEY EXTRA
To further your vocational experience, you will have the opportunity to participate in a range of activities organised by your tutors including Police and Fire Service visits and personal activity days with the Army, RAF, Navy and Royal Marines. The BTEC First Diploma in Public Services can be a stepping stone for successful candidates towards entering initial employment as, for example, a Police Community Support Officer, an Army Soldier, or a Royal Air Force Airman/Woman.
