Level 3 in Music
WHY
TAKE THIS COURSE?
This vocational subject is aimed at experienced and talented musicians
who wish to further their theory and practical skills whilst learning
more about the music industry. If you have a passion for performing
and learning about a wide range of popular music styles including Rock
‘n’ Roll, Britpop, Motown/Soul, Rock, Reggae, Funk and Folk,
as well as composing your own music and learning how the industry works,
this course will be right up your street.
WHAT
WILL I STUDY?
This course aims to help you develop your skills in all areas of music,
with a strong focus on both performance and theoretical aspects of the
subject. You will take part in individual instrumental lessons and regular
group rehearsals which will culminate in numerous live performances
throughout the academic year. You will also study music theory, composition,
the history of popular music and sound recording. Over the duration
of the course you will also take on additional roles including marketing
and production management.
HOW
WILL I BE ASSESSED?
As this is a vocational course it will be assessed entirely through
coursework. Each and every piece of work you do will contribute to your
final grade. Each unit studied will be broken down into specific criteria
which will be assessed in a variety of ways including performances,
tutor reports of your contributions in lessons, presentations, podcasts,
blogs and finally, written coursework. It is important to note that
although there are no written exams, your written work will be an essential
part of your course and strict deadlines will be set for handing in
these assignments.
WHAT
SKILLS AND SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?
Due to the nature of this course, you will need to be an accomplished
performer and should be at least grade 5 standard or equivalent on your
chosen instrument. You do not need to have any other formal music qualifications.
It is a requirement that you complete an audition and basic theory test
prior to enrolment.
WHAT
CAN I DO NEXT?
Students who study BTEC Music have in the past gone on to study Music
Performance, Music Technology and Music Production at University. Other
avenues could include Media and Broadcasting, Business, Marketing and
Management. The many possible employment opportunities include working
as a Performer, Producer or Technician, or as a Journalist.

Enrichment opportunities include additional music theory classes, Jazz
Club, ‘Breathe’ the College Choir, and playing in the band
for in-house theatre productions. Additionally, you will have the opportunity
to attend regular visits, workshops and trips throughout the year.
