AS Use of Mathematics
WHY
TAKE THIS COURSE?
You should take ‘AS Use of Mathematics’ if you enjoy mathematics
and would like to develop skills in mathematical modelling, communication
and reasoning. This course is designed to encourage students to apply
mathematics to their studies, work or interests. It will support students
who are studying other subjects where mathematics is useful, for example
Biology, Geography, Psychology, Business Studies and Economics.
WHAT
WILL I STUDY?
You will study mathematical topics in practical real-life contexts and
learn skills which are readily transferable to either the real world
or to your other studies. You will have the opportunity to study practical
and relevant mathematics. There is one compulsory module, Algebra, and
two more to be chosen from FSMQ Data Analysis, Hypothesis Testing, Dynamics,
Mathematical Principles For Personal Finance and Decision Mathematics.
HOW
WILL I BE ASSESSED?
Each module is assessed by a written paper with a pre-release data sheet.
The exams are taken in the summer.
WHAT
SKILLS AND SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?
Students will normally be expected to have at least a grade B in GCSE
Mathematics. You will need to be hard working, conscientious, well organised,
and willing to spend approximately four hours per week working on your
Mathematics outside of lessons.
WHAT
CAN I DO NEXT?
Subject to interest the course may well be offered at A2 for the following
year. An AS in the Use of Mathematics will help with applications to
many degrees and also with employment opportunities.
