Level 3 Information Technology
WHY
TAKE THIS COURSE?
If you have a keen interest in computers, in how they work and what
they are used for, then BTEC Level 3 IT is the right course for you.
You can take this qualification studying a varying number of units,
either 3 - BTEC Certificate, 6 - BTEC Subsidiary Diploma, 12 - BTEC
Diploma or 18 - BTEC Extended Diploma. If your career plans are a little
uncertain BTEC Level 3 IT is a nationally recognised qualification,
which goes well with many degrees and careers.
WHAT
WILL I STUDY?
All students will study Communication and Employability Skills for IT
and Computer Systems. A number of units are studied which may include
Maintaining Computer Systems, Digital Graphics, Computer Animation,
Event Driven Programming, Communication Technologies, Website Production,
Computer Systems Architecture, Database Design, Client Side Customisation
of Web Pages, Controlling Systems Using IT and Developing Computer Games.
HOW
WILL I BE ASSESSED?
There are no exams. All work is internally marked and then moderated
by BTEC. Assignments are criteria based and when sufficient criteria
have been achieved, a Pass, Merit or Distinction can be awarded for
the unit. The unit grades are then added up and an overall course grade
awarded. All units must be passed.
WHAT
SKILLS AND SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?
You need to have an interest in computers as the course will form the
major part of your timetable. No prior knowledge is assumed but a desire
to learn and absorb new information is a great advantage. You will learn
and develop a variety of skills such as programming, web design, graphics,
animation, team work and practical computer maintenance.
A minimum grade D in Maths and English is required together with an
ability or interest in ICT.
WHAT
CAN I DO NEXT?
Many IT students go on to study IT or similar subjects in Higher Education.
Alternatively this qualification will equip you with a broad range of
technical skills which are suitable for employment. This course enables
the students to feel confident and have in depth experience with a wide
and varied range of technological solutions.

EXTRA
The Curriculum Area organises lots of extra activities for students
including trips and visits to local industries and Universities. You
will be able to take part in enrichment activities such as Flash Animation
techniques, Google Sketchup methods and events organised by the University
of Salford and Queen Mary University of London. You will be able to
take part in other enrichment activities such as designing robots, creating
websites and computer games.
