AS Extended Project

WHY TAKE THIS COURSE?
You will be able to choose any topic you like to research… yes any topic, it does not have to be related to one that you are currently studying.
Do you want to go to University? An AS in the Extended Project will allow you to do plenty of research to discuss in your personal statement or if you are invited to interview, giving you a potential advantage over other applicants.
The AS Extended Project is the only AS that will allow you to achieve an A*. In all other subjects, the A* grade is only available at A2. Therefore, as you will have your AS results before applying for University, you will be able to impress universities with your potentially high grade in the Extended Project.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?
You will have a number of lessons throughout the year to assist you with the techniques of researching and compiling your actual project. However, the Extended Project relies upon you being self-motivated and working independently. You will also have one-to-one meetings with your supervisor throughout the year for extra support.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
There are 3 elements to the Extended Project that form the assessment:
1. A production log detailing your methods of research and documenting any problems that have occurred during the Project.
2. Your project – either a 5000 word written piece or an alternative project (e.g. designing a website, writing and performing a play, designing an artefact) and 1000 word summary.
3. A presentation summarising your findings during the project.

WHAT SKILLS AND SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?
You will need to be self-motivated and willing to invest time each week in the project. You will develop many of the skills that will be useful at University including amongst others how to research, how to plan a project and how to self-evaluate.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?
As the Extended Project can be focused on any topic, it can be exceptionally useful preparation for University. Not only will you develop skills in preparation for University and employment but also develop your content knowledge of your chosen topic.

PRIESTLEY EXTRA
Students will have the opportunity to participate in a visit to a University Library to further their research. The Extended Project is an excellent opportunity to undertake some original research as part of your project or work-based placement.
