/ A2 English Language and Literature
WHY
TAKE THIS COURSE?
If you think you may enjoy the challenge of a course which involves
the study of both literary and non-literary texts as well as the opportunity
to write creatively, then this may be the English course for you. You
will study different varieties of spoken and written language as well
as develop your knowledge about literature. In addition, you will develop
a wide variety of skills that are well regarded by both employers and
universities, and which will complement many of your other courses at
Priestley.
WHAT
WILL I STUDY?
At AS, you will study written and spoken language and literary and non-literary
texts including; Kressman Taylor’s Address Unknown, Margaret Atwood’s
The Handmaid’s Tale and a Samuel Beckett play, Waiting for Godot.
You will produce a 3500-word coursework folder containing two pieces
of original writing (literary and non-literary) with a commentary. At
A2, you will study varieties of written and spoken language and a range
of non-literary and literary texts including drama and poetry. You will
also undertake an independent topic-based study for coursework to produce
a 4000-word coursework folder containing two pieces of original writing
(literary and non-literary) with a commentary.
HOW
WILL I BE ASSESSED?
40% Coursework, 60% Examination for both AS and A2 courses.
WHAT
SKILLS AND SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?
You must have at least a grade C in both GCSE English Language and English
Literature. You must be prepared to learn a range of linguistic terminology,
to learn about English grammar, and how to analyse language usage in
both speech and writing. You must read independently and you will need
to write essays and develop the skills to express your ideas clearly
and logically. You will develop oral communication skills through discussion
and formal presentations. You will also develop independent research
skills using the internet, Virtual Learning Environment and Learning
Resource Centre.
WHAT
CAN I DO NEXT?
English Language and Literature prepares you for careers which require
good communication skills, such as; publishing, public relations, marketing,
journalism, media, management, the legal profession, teaching and many
others.

to attend theatre performances and conferences, and join us on residential
visits. You can also join the Creative Writing Group and College Magazine.
