BTEC National Diploma / Certificate in Children's Care Learning and Development

WHY TAKE A BTEC DIPLOMA / CERTIFICATE IN CHILDREN’S
CARE LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT?

This is a demanding full time course which provides training for those who wish to work with children aged 0-8 years in a variety of settings. You will undertake part of your course at College and within arranged training placements so that you will gain experience with different age groups. Completion of your studies will give Qualified Practitioner Status (for 0-8 years) which is essential for employment in this sector.

You can study for either a Diploma or Certificate qualification. If you intend to go straight into employment then the Certificate is the correct choice and for University you should follow the Diploma route.

WHAT ARE THE KEY AREAS OF STUDY?
A variety of units will be studied. Some relate to working with young children, others are about aspects of children’s development. You will also learn about working with families and other professionals and also legal, historical, social, economic and environmental issues which affect children and their families.

WHAT SKILLS WILL I NEED AND DEVELOP?
You will need a mature attitude and a commitment to complete the course. Working independently and undertaking research will be a large part of the course along with the development of practical skills.

ARE THERE ANY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS I NEED?
If you are considering becoming an Early Years teacher, we strongly advise that you have a GCSE in English, Maths and Science at a minimum of grade C before starting this course. All students will be required to complete a CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check in order to attend mandatory work placements.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
Students can take either a Diploma (18 units) or Certificate (12 units) qualification – equivalent to 3 or 2 A levels respectively. There are no examinations.

PRIESTLEY EXTRA
Part of your planned programme of study gives you the opportunity to take part in enrichment activities which could include Sign Language, First Aid and Play Therapy. You will also be invited to engage in international work experiences and study experiences along with visits and team building residentials.
